Sexology

sexology psychology therapy alina leoni

What Is a Sexologist?

I help motivated individuals and couples who feel sexually disconnected to reconnect with themselves and their partner.

I facilitate clients’ sexual growth by helping them to identify their sexual goals and by offering education, resources, tools and techniques to help them meet those goals and ultimately manage their own sexual growth.

I am a trained professional, with years of experience, specializing in sexual and relationship issues. This is something I know a lot about, and work with exclusively. I offer sex counseling to help people understand and accept themselves as sexual beings and meet their sexual goals. I work with individuals and couples. It is very similar to marriage and couples therapy and has an added focus on sexuality. As a Sexologist I am inherently sex-positive and maintain a broad perspective by taking factors such as biological, psychological, sociological, anthropological and historical into consideration when addressing sexual issues. I am nonjudgmental, which means that I do not have any preconceptions of what a client’s sexuality “should” look like.

How Does a Clinical Sexologist Work?

A Clinical Sexologist is the same as a sex therapist. I have advanced training in Counseling Psychology as well as in sexuality. I combine the two in my sex therapy practice.

The sex therapy process entails the following steps:

  • Helping clients to identify where they are, and where they want to be when they finish their work with a psychosexual specialist.
  • Helping clients to identify the factors that allow them to feel safe, and those that prevent them from meeting their sexual goals.
  • Designing and suggesting exercises to help clients to progressively expand their sexual comfort zones until they reach their goals.

This is considered “brief therapy,” which is goal-oriented counseling though sometimes sexual difficulties appear to be rooted in deeper emotional issues. If a client requires medical attention before or during work with a Sexologist, referrals will be provided, to supplement the effectiveness of the sex therapy.

Dissatisfaction with the sexual relationship and the loss of that shared intimacy, in many instances, may lead to negative feelings and attitudes which are destructive to the relationship.

Many marriages end, therefore, because of unresolved sexual differences and difficulties. Seeing a sex therapist can resolve those issues.

The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual explicitly recognizes that people sometimes have a need for sexuality education, counseling, and therapy even when there is nothing “wrong” with them. It supports work that doesn’t just remediate sexual dysfunction but improves sexual health.

Reasons Why You Must Visit a Sexologist!

If you feel that no one can help or guide you in channelising your desires, you are wrong. A relationship is subject to a lot of misunderstandings, especially when the sex life is disturbed or fading. Most people tend to keep quiet about such issues instead of seeking help. As a sexologist I specialize in sexual problems and know how to deal with them.

Here are the top reasons why you should consider visiting a sexologist:

  • If you have a low sex drive, you are bound to avoid physical intimacy with your partner. This might happen because of various reasons, such as hormonal changes, certain medications, stress, and fatigue. If your low sex drive has become a persistent problem in your life, you should consult a sexologist about it.
  • If you experience intense sexual behavior, urges and fantasies which involve strange objects, situations and activities, it is a genuine problem. It is likely to be associated with some psychological issue. This may lead to great distress in your social, personal and occupational life. Visiting a sexologist is very important during such situations.
  • There are several physiological problems which may lower your sex drive or may disable you to perform in bed. In men, disorders such as erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and the inability to penetrate in spite of having an erection are common. Although these can be treated with medicines, visiting a sexologist will help you know about the condition and the different treatment modes available. Such problems in women include vaginal dryness, dyspareunia, vaginal trauma or vaginismus.
  • When your sexual needs and desires do not match with that of your partner’s, problems and issues are likely to surface. One of you may suffer from a low sex drive as well. As a couple, it is important to communicate with each other and visit a sexologist.
  • If you are obsessed and preoccupied with sexual thoughts all the time and your performance and functioning are being affected, a psychological issue is indicated. This needs immediate treatment and hence, you must visit a sexologist.
  • It may be possible for you to feel guilty about having sex. This may happen on the account of a bad sexual experience in the past, such as being a victim of child abuse. You can solve the problem by talking it out with a sexologist.

You should also visit a sexologist if you are unable to achieve orgasms. This is more common in women than men. Ejaculation and orgasm are associated with each other. If you cannot attain an orgasm in spite of having a sex drive, you should be concerned and seek medical opinion.

So in case you have a concern or query regarding sexual health I am here to help you understand yourself better and get the answers to your questions.
